Our Story
Who runs Shamar Treks, where we operate, and how we decide what to put in an itinerary.
Shamar Treks is a trekking and expedition company based in Sorakhutte, Kathmandu. We are run by working guides rather than by an office, which is the main thing that shapes how our trips are put together.
Who we are
Anos Tamang founded the company and still guides. Most of what is written on this site — route detail, where the hard days fall, which lodge fills in October — comes from people who have walked the ground rather than from a supplier's brochure.
Where we operate
Across Nepal's trekking regions, from four-day foothill walks to twenty-five-day crossings of the Tibetan plateau:
- Annapurna — the widest range, from Poon Hill to the Circuit and Nar Phu
- Everest and the Khumbu — Base Camp, and the trekking peaks above it
- Langtang and the Ganesh Himal
- Manaslu and the Tsum Valley
- Mustang, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga and the far west
How we build an itinerary
Three rules, and they explain most of the differences between our day counts and a cheaper quote.
Acclimatisation days stay in. They are the first thing removed to make a price look competitive, and they are the reason people finish. Where we sell a trek longer than somebody else, the extra days are almost always these.
We say what the walking is actually like. Where a road now runs beside the old trail, where a landslide section needs crossing early, where a lodge has ten beds and October has more than ten trekkers — it goes on the page. A client who knows what is coming has a better trip.
Turning back is the guide's call. Our guides have the company's backing to end an attempt on weather, conditions or how a client is acclimatising, and that decision is never treated as a failure. It is the one part of this business where there is nothing to negotiate.
What we will not do
- Guarantee a summit or a pass. Nobody can, and an operator who does is selling something they do not control.
- Run a restricted-area trek for a single trekker. The permit does not exist; anyone offering one is not telling you something.
- Compress an itinerary below what the altitude needs, whatever the budget.
Get in touch
If you are weighing two regions, or not sure whether a trek is within reach, say so when you write to us — that is a more useful conversation than a quote, and we would rather move you to a trip that fits than sell you one that does not. The contact page has our details.
